The first art exhibition of the Water Drop project “The sea is full of kind creatures. The sea is full of trash!” opened last week in Gerðarsafn Kópavogur Art Museum.
Since January, our 13 Young Curators from Iceland, Estonia, Denmark and Finland have been working with water-based stories from Nordic children’s literature authors H.C. Andersen, Astrid Lindgren and Tove Jansson.
The exhibition will be open until the 31.10.2021.
But what is this exhibition about?
“This exhibition is about the creation of a room where we all can discover how the interest of the ocean life, the problems human action creates for other creatures, can be emphasized by introducing classic literature into our current conversations and transforming it into direct action. Yes! This room is a parliament that reunites the portrayals of those children’s book characters – reproductions and beautiful originals – with our own presence. These three communities together – fictional characters, children and adults – may have the power to change our world for the better.”
– Chus Martinez, Curatorial Guidance
On 25th of September, a few children from “Stóra upplestrarkeppnin” or “The Big Reading Competition” will read Tove Jansson’s The Last Dragon in the World in Gerðarsafn Art Museum. Afterwards, Icelandic author Gerður Kristný will tell us about Tove Jansson’s life and work.
